What is 'Ethical Tourism'?
Free Range believes that the following factors are important in deciding if your holiday is ‘ethical’:
Environmental impact
- Carbon neutrality - neutralise your carbon emissions from flying, driving or cruising and expect your holiday operator to do the same in their operations.
- Respect the eco-system:
- avoiding polluting or contaminating water supplies;
- don’t litter;
- don’t endanger flora and fauna by your actions
- Recycle - or make sure your tour guide does
- Use water carefully
- Use public transport (where possible)
Economic impact
- Maximum economic benefit to the local community
- Buy local produce, particularly food
- Use local suppliers
- Use public transport (where possible)
Social impact
- Language – does tourism help to promote and protect local languages, particularly where they are endangered?
- Culture – does tourism help to sustain indigenous culture
- Social Cohesion – does tourism and employment in tourism help communities to thrive?
The responsibility for making your holiday ethical lies with both you the tourist and your holiday company.
