Q. How cold is Finland in the winter?

A. Well, that’s depends where you are and which month we are talking about! Have a look at Weather in Finland for some temperature information relating to the south.

Remember that Helsinki and other towns on the sea are normally more moderate because of the sea’s warming effect (even when frozen). In 2006, the lowest temperatures in Helsinki were about minus 20°c – that’s very cold and you need to cover every part of your body very well. However, typically Helsinki ranges between +2° c to about -10°c in mid-winter.

In Lapland, the temperature between December and March is typically between -5°c and -40°c. However, Finns say the air here is much ‘drier’ and therefore the cold doesn’t bite so much.

Any clearer? If you are coming in the winter you MUST bring very warm winter clothing, wear several layers, always wear a hat and, if it’s too cold, avoid certain activities and staying outside for too long.

Q. Is Finland expensive?

A. It’s not cheap, but it’s also not as expensive as Norway or Denmark. To help you make up your own mind here is the price of some everyday items:

    • 12 pack beer: €9-12
    • Bottle of wine: starting at €6
    • Restaurant Main course: €11-24
    • Car Hire: from €175 for a week

Q. What are the Finns like? I’ve heard they are not very talkative.

A. The stereotype ‘talkative as a Finn’ is true for many. We find the Finns a polite and laid-back lot and often a bit shy. When Finns go to their log cabin on holiday they keep to themselves, so don’t expect BBQ invitations. However, you should find yourself well looked after and service is normally very good.  Reassuringly for visitors, Finns are also very honest and trustworthy, so problems are rare.
